The Story Behind The Name
Amelia Mary Earhart (24 July 1897 – declared dead 5 January 1939) was a noted American aviation pioneer, author and women's rights advocate. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, which she was awarded as the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, including being the first woman to fly solo across the North American Continent and back, and a world altitude record. Her celebrity like stature led to her own clothing line with Macy’s, and a position as Associate Editor of Cosmopolitan! However, flight was her passion. Earhart was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots; and along side Eleanor Roosevelt, was a strong advocate for women’s rights.
Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island during an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day. [Source: Wikipedia]
